It’s been Veganuary and veganism is the hot topic.  It’s so good we are really thinking about what we consume or buy.  You don’t have to be vegan to make your home or business cruelty free. There’s such easy choices you can make that don’t involve animal suffering.

I’m one of the first interior designers in the UK to be Certified Cruelty Free. I thought I had a good understanding of what went on as we had to scrutinise every material used in the store design when I was a designer for The Body Shop International.  Sadly there was lots I didn’t know.  I was horrified to learn about live plucking, the cruelty of the wool industry and the horror of the leather industry for the tannery workers as well as the animals (notice I’m not saying cows) that are skinned.

I’ve been an interior designer for over 20 years and am constantly researching and sourcing better choices for my clients. They are usually better performing too.  I’m been subconsciously delivering vegan interiors for years but I’m really wanting to seek out more for clients and include as many ethically sourced and eco-friendly elements as I can.  It’s a passion.  I really love to research and learn.

After I completed the course I made some changes at home.  There’s things I learnt that might help you – so I promise to write a later blog about it.

Well you’ve obviously already have seen it because you’re here – but I’ve just updated the website after some terrific advice from my friend and mentor LuAnn Nigara.

Although I love all sectors of interior design, my The Body Shop background naturally led me to the commercial interior design sector which I really enjoy.  I think I find it more challenging – having the extra layer of safety in the specifications used and I really do like to design a shopfront and work with a graphic designer on it’s signage (Dan Hinde, Stoats & Weasels, Star Deluxe to name but a few!).  I’ve recently been working with the very talented Alex Borg on a (secret) project and I thought as I’ve been in business for 12 years it’d be good to mark it with a lovely new logo designed by him.  I hope you like it!

LuAnn encouraged me to show large photos of projects instantly, as soon as someone reaches the site – and she said to show the project type I love the most. Which I have to say are ‘eateries’.  Not just restaurants but cafes, refectories, lounges and pubs as well.  One day I’d really love to combine my two favourites: ethical sourcing and an eatery project.  You never know – it might happen!

Thank yous to: LuAnn Nigara, Nancy Ganzekaufer, Murray Dolan, Alex Borg, Teri Vincent, Wayne Matthews-Stroud, Paul Curtiss, Sue and Ian Bullock

The small but so, so useful annexe building in Oxford Place, opposite Kings Brighton has been handed over to Clients Kings Colleges today.

It provides classrooms, laboratories and a large bright art room at the top.

Fans of the ‘Beach bus’ designed for Brighton & Hove Buses by Harrison Agency and Materialise Interiors can now buy their very own 1:76 scale model from Corgi.

What a huge compliment that they chose that one to miniaturise!

We’ve just completed a brand new building next to The Level in Brighton for my regular and lovely client – Kings Colleges. It’s a large building and has been quite a project. A team of us have been working on this project over two and a half years. I worked closely with the client and wider team on the design, specification, implementation and installation. We are all so happy with the result.

It sits on the site of the former Buxton’s furniture store. The 5 storey building is comprised of a cafeteria, reception, outside areas, offices, resource centre, 17 classrooms, accommodation (62 bedrooms!) and student common rooms.

Lots has been going on for Real Patisserie recently.

Look out for their spacious new shop at 147 Church Road, Hove and the newly updated small but perfectly formed original first shop at 43 Trafalgar Street, Brighton. Both with fantastic in-house bakeries and such lovely staff.

It’s been great to be part of the team again….wishing you all the very best! Screen Shot 2017-06-18 at 18.18.28

It was a great award ceremony at The Dorchester hotel. With award entries from 41 countries, I was very flattered to be a finalist there.

There were two very worthy winners in my category as one was awarded overall winner 2015. Both Dutch companies. You really can’t beat Dutch design – well done winners!

Well, this is a wonderfully exciting week for Materialise Interiors!

It’s the 10th birthday of starting the business, after leaving the security of 10 years as a designer at The Body Shop’s head office.

On top of that great anniversary, this week is a bonkers one. The awards ceremony for the SBID International Design Awards at the Dorchester Hotel is later this week ….and because of the award nomination, I’m invited to the House Of Lords today for afternoon tea!

I will let you know how the week goes!

Work is underway on the ‘Science Bus’ for Mile Oak Primary School. I’m working on the design with the talented Adam Collier-Woods who’s ‘Big Green Bus’ conversion was featured in detail on Channel 4’s ‘Amazing Spaces’. We are converting the bus into a science discovery centre which will be permanently housed in the grounds of the school.

Samantha Heselden and the team at Brighton & Hove Buses have been pivotal in making this project happen for the school. There’s been lots of other generous benefactors including Martyn Industrials, Thermoserv, Shoreham Port Authority and Sunbury Fabrics. There’s more to come too including wonderful artwork by Jason McQuillen of ‘iownthisart’ and the kind help offered by parents of children at the school.

It’s such a brilliant project to be involved in and I’m proud to be part of the team!
