Materialise Interiors

BIID Registered Interior Designer®

I am proud to be one of the first interior designers in the UK to be VEGANDESIGN.ORG CERTIFIED™

In addition  to my standard design services, I am now able to offer clients cruelty free (vegan) design as an option for clients’ business or home interior projects. It’s very easily and effectively done without comprising the specification or budget.

I’ll be happy to show you options as part of the design process.

If you are not in the South East of England, I can offer an online eDesign service so I can still help you remotely online via video conferencing.

I understand completely that people might not get what Vegan Design means. We are rather bombarded with information and I’m also slightly conscious that the word ‘vegan’ might have some guilt attached for some people. I’m not in the business of making people feel guilty.

I really DO want to raise awareness though.

You don’t need to be vegan to have a vegan specification for your home or business. It’s just about making informed choices.

Please book a free call if you would like to talk about it.

Why Vegan Design?

Aside from the obvious benefits of not having animal suffering involved, alternative specifications are just as good and often are better performing. There are also huge health and wellness benefits – particularly to people suffering with allergies or with sensory issues.  I really want to give clients long-lasting interiors but also healthy ones that have low environmental impact.

This all comes very naturally to me as I spent 10 happy years working as a Retail Designer at The Body Shop International (which incidentally started with me writing a “Dear Anita….” letter as a newly graduated designer).  At The Body Shop everything was carefully sourced and specified for their retail interiors.  During my time at The Body Shop International, I was Technical Store Designer for the Global Centre of the business.  Our team designed, trialed and rolled-out out store, concession and kiosk concepts Globally. All materials and suppliers were carefully scrutinised, working closely with the Business Ethics team.   I also learnt a lot from being a ‘Values Champion’- I was part of the team that was selected from across the business who ensured the company’s environmental values were adhered to in the day-to-day running of the business.  I enjoy bringing these and the ethical sourcing learnings to my client’s projects – such as use of sustainable timber, eco-friendly paints and recycled elements.

When I heard about the VEGANDESIGN.ORG CERTIFIED™ course I decided to top up my knowledge and I completed the course in July ’17.  Some of the content was hard to watch but necessary to know and I learned a great deal.  Interior design isn’t just about people and spaces, it sadly involves animals (and tannery workers) in shockingly horrible ways.  There were many gaps in my knowledge. I really recommend that anyone with an interest in the interior design or the fashion industry take this course. It’s really informative and is pro-active in presenting the alternatives – of which there are plenty now thanks to technological advances. Using animal products in the interiors of our homes and businesses is no longer ‘natural’, better or healthier.

I don’t want to be ‘the only’ interior designer offering a vegan design specification in my area. I want to be one of many! If any interior designers would like to know more about the course or to share and collaborate on learnings – please get in touch with me.
